There has been a slowly growing and coalescing critical mass of artists and sculptors working with paper in India, accelerating, especially over the last 15-20 years. Paper was perceived as having little or no value, but the early brave pioneers have now been joined by many confident younger artists who have really pushed the boundaries of possibilities, establishing work with paper as both viable and respected in its own right. These voices have however been working in silos, in selective pockets. The “Artists’ Projects” in the India Paper Triennial is a first ever coming together on a single platform of these voices of paper (both established and emerging) who are harnessing and representing paper and paper techniques in ways that invoke immense joy, surprise and deep appreciation. In organizing these voices into a resonant and resounding expression, the India Paper Triennial invites galleries, foundations and institutions who have been supporting paper artists over many years and decades, a call to the patrons to unify and amplify the sounds of these smaller beautiful steams into a mighty river, a collective, an announcement : paper is light, but no longer a light-weight, it has taken flight, and it has arrived.
